A roof’s primary purpose is to keep out the elements. In Alabama, that generally means rain. A metal roof achieves this in one of two ways: by being water-resistant or water-shedding. If you’re having trouble deciding which kind of roof your contractor will install, here’s what you should know about each.

Water-Resistant Roofs

Water-resistant metal roofs have a low pitch, which diverts slow-moving water down. Also called hydrostatic roofs, they don’t typically have a secondary membrane to keep moisture from penetrating the structure. Instead, they’re usually comprised of standing seams that are at least 2 inches high. As long as the roofing materials are installed properly, and the joints between each panel are mechanically sealed, the underlying insulation and decking will remain dry, even in the heaviest downpours.

Water-Shedding Roofs

Water-shedding roofs have a pitch greater than 3:12. Sometimes called hydrokinetic roofs, these roofs rely on their steep slope to ensure water rolls off as fast as possible. Most residential roofs have a slope ranging from 4:12 to 9:12 to allow for maximum water shedding.

Just because the water’s moving across the surface quickly, though, doesn’t mean it won’t penetrate the underlying materials. As such, water-shedding roofs usually include a secondary membrane to ensure a tight seal around the screws, nails, and other fasteners.

Additional Leak Protection

Regardless of whether you opt for a water-resistant or -shedding roof, you can protect the underlying structure further by staying on top of all maintenance. That means scheduling a professional inspection at least once a year and after every major weather event that may cause damage.

If you want to install a metal roof, ask your contractor to get the materials from Dixieland Metals of Alabama, LLC. Based in Dothan, this supplier ships custom panels anywhere in the United States. Using as much recycled content as possible—typically at least 25%—their metal roofing materials are made to last. They also sell quality pole barn kits, trim, and a wide range of accessories.
