3 Tips to Prevent Rust on Metal Buildings
Metal buildings have many advantages. The material is versatile, cost-efficient, and easy to custom-engineer. Whether it's a small pole barn or a massive industrial warehouse, you want your metal structure to last. Protecting it against rust, which can cause holes, cracks, and structural instability, is an essential part of upkeep. Take the following steps to ward off this unwelcome damage.
How to Protect Metal Buildings From Rust
1. Use Pre-Galvanized Parts
Opt for pre-galvanized materials for your secondary framing. Pre-galvanized C-sections and roof purlins are more resistant to rust. This coating will also protect against rust by sealing the building off from moisture penetration. Since rust is more prone to develop in damp environments, this treatment is a valuable extra.
2. Apply a Primer
Have your metal manufacturer apply an anti-rust primer before delivering your metal building parts. Alternatively, you can apply primer to an existing building yourself using a paint roller, brush, or sprayer.
If you plan to paint the structure, wait two hours and then follow this step by applying an even coat of acrylic primer or base coat. Then, wait another two hours before painting.
3. Remove Rust Immediately
If you do notice signs of rust, take action quickly to prevent further spread and deterioration. Use a steel brush dipped in vinegar to scrub away any visible traces. The acidic solution will eat right through the rust. You can then power-wash away any remaining dirt and grease. Finally, use a tack cloth to dry the metal building.
