Whether powered or manual, a saw is one of the most useful tools in any workshop. When used properly, this device can be used to cut, trim, and shape a wide array of materials. However, saws of all kinds pose a risk of injury when used improperly. In the guide below, take a closer look at some important safety tips to keep in mind when using a hand saw or power saw.

Hand Saw Safety

Like most tools, hand saws are deceptively simple but require some skill to use properly. To begin with, as with any tool, you should wear safety glasses, a face mask, and work gloves when using a hand saw since splinters and sawdust can irritate the lungs when inhaled and cause minor injuries if they enter the eyes. You should then select a saw whose blade is straight, intact, and without missing teeth or other defects.

Starting slowly, move the saw in full-length strokes directed away from your body. Cutting too quickly can result in an uneven or inaccurate cut. Additionally, moving too quickly can also lead you to lose control of the blade and leave you at risk of accidental injury.

Once you’ve finished cutting, lightly lubricate the blade with gun oil or other lubricants to prevent rust. You should then inspect the blade for damage such as broken or missing teeth and then store the tool safely in a locked area.

Power Saw Safety

Electric saws such as handheld circular saws, miter saws, and reciprocating saws have different safety requirements than hand saws due to their differing methods of operation. Before each use, wear safety glasses, gloves, a face mask, and ear protection. Then, make sure your material is securely in place on a workbench or on sawhorses. You'll need to mark your lumber, metal, or other material carefully and begin by cutting slowly to establish the correct pattern. Before each additional cut, inspect the previous one and assess whether it’s safe to proceed.

Before and after each use, make sure your saw’s safety features, such as blade guards and splitters, are intact and operational. When operating the tool, it's important to use only sharpened blades, as dull ones may require you to force your cut, leaving you more likely to slip or injure yourself. You should also keep your work area clear of scrap, sawdust, and power cords that may obstruct the blade. If you’re using a table or band saw, use a prefabricated push stick or length of wood to push your material through the blade without risking your fingers.
