Like other home heating and cooling systems, heat pumps can experience function problems that interfere with interior comfort. If you are new to heat pump usage, familiarize yourself with common issues that can occur from prolonged wintertime use here. While some problems are simple fixes, others require an appliance repair expert.

3 Common Heat Pump Problems

1. Won’t Turn On

Check your breaker panel and thermostat to determine if a power or temperature setting issue is to blame for a non-operating heat pump. If the thermostat is on the correct setting and the breaker switch is on, the appliance might have a broken reversing valve or starter capacitor. The reversing valve reserves the refrigerant’s direction to accommodate heating or cooling needs, while the starter capacitor carries the electrical charge that activates the motor.

You’ll hear a clicking sound within the appliance if there’s a capacitor issue. Both problems require professional servicing.

2. Not Heating

Inspect the pump’s air filter and clean or replace it if the home heating appliance has stopped heating. A clogged filter prevents air from reaching the compressor, the part responsible for heating the air. Also, check the outdoor component since snow, leaves, ice, and other debris will block airflow as well.

Clean the outside section to see if the pump starts heating. If you’re still experiencing problems, there’s likely a low freon level, which requires professional attention.

3. Frozen Outdoor Unit

While it's normal for a mild frost to coat the outdoor unit's coil during winter, a solid sheet of ice over the component prevents efficient airflow and causes the appliance to work overtime. Check for water leaking onto the coil, such as from overflowing gutters, to prevent further accumulations. Other reasons call for professional services, such as a malfunctioning fan motor or a defective defrost timer. A failing fan motor prevents any heat transfer processes, while a problematic defrost timer allows the outdoor unit to freeze over.
