Homeowners who love to cook often prefer to cook over a flame. Like any other device, stove appliance parts occasionally malfunction. If the electric starter on your gas appliance continues to click after you ignite the burner, here’s what you should know.

Why Is My Gas Stove Clicking?

If you cook with gas, you know that the igniter clicks when you turn a knob to fire up the burner. It should stop, however, as soon as the flame appears. If it continues clicking or if the burner won’t ignite, you may have an appliance part problem.

The igniter may click if you’ve spilled liquid onto the cooktop or sprayed it with a cleaner. Caked-on food particles on the surface of the burner or a misaligned burner cap may also prevent the igniter from working correctly.

How to Troubleshoot the Problem

appliance partsDepending on the source of the problem, you may have success in troubleshooting igniter issues safely on your own. If not, consult an appliance parts supplier for advice.

If you suspect moisture, detach the burner cap to facilitate evaporation. Air will help dry out a burner quickly. With the burners off, you can also wipe down the cooking surface with a dry towel to soak up any liquids, or aim a fan at the spill.

If you see grime, use a paperclip to gently chip away and dislodge it. Wipe away any residue or crumbs. If burner cap is misaligned, reposition it. If this appliance part is ill fitting or thick with baked-on grease, replace it if a thorough cleaning doesn’t solve the problem.
