It’s easy to throw everything from your hamper in the local laundromat washer or dryer. However, not taking the proper laundry care can result in issues like discolored and prematurely worn garments. To help you take the best care of your clothes, review the following tips.

Do:

Review care labels.

Most clothes feature labels that provide specific laundry care instructions, such as “launder cold with like colors, “Hand wash,” and “Avoid placing in the dryer.” By following these instructions, you’ll keep your clothing in good condition for years.

Ignoring instructions can result in damage not only to the garment in question, but other clothes as well. For example, if you wash and dry a sweatshirt with plastic bead embellishments on high heat, the beads can melt, stain other clothes, and create a mess in the machines.

Separate clothes by color.

Separating dirty clothes into light and dark piles avoids color migrations and discoloration. Consider separating light clothes further, as it’s best to launder white clothes together because they are most susceptible to dye stains. You do not want your white clothes to come out pink or lavender because you washed them with red or purple garments, respectively. Using color-safe bleach is also a good idea for light-colored clothing.

Don’t:

Wash delicate clothing in machines.

Laundry care for delicate items can require hand washing, depending on how fragile the fabric is. Lace typically requires hand washing, while other delicate fabrics, such as silk and satin, can usually withstand washing machines. Check the care instructions for such items and use the gentle cycle on the washing machine. Generally, delicate garments should air dry to avoid heat damage.

Go overboard with detergent.

Using an excessive amount of detergent per load prevents thorough rinsing during the washer’s rinse cycle. As a result, detergent residue remains on your clothes, which makes them filmy. Soap residue on clothes also attracts dirt and grime.

Rather than spending too much money on detergents and dealing with prematurely dirty clothes, use a measuring cup for each load. Most washing machines feature instructions detailing how much detergent you should use in light of the load size.
