Once you get clothes home from the laundromat, there might be certain items you wish to iron before wearing. Removing all the wrinkles in the fabric will prevent unsightly bulges and creases. The following advice is meant to improve your ironing results while preserving the apparel.

How to Iron Clothes Correctly

1. Spritz Fabric With an Ironing Spray

laundromatAs soon as you pull clothes out of commercial dryers, spritz the fabric with an ironing spray. You can make a homemade spray from equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. The mist will release the wrinkles, so they are easier to remove with an iron later. You can add an essential oil to the mixture to mask the vinegar smell.

2. Use Long Strokes

Using the proper ironing technique is an important aspect of laundry care. Short strokes, for example, can stretch the fabric and cause ripples to form. Holding the iron on sections for long periods can cause scorch marks. To preserve the fabric, iron using long strokes in one direction. Work around zippers, buttons, sequins, and other decorative embellishments as heat can warp metal and plastic.

3. Work From the Outside In

Hang pants and long-sleeve shirts as soon as they come out of the dryer, so wrinkles don’t set in. When ironing long-sleeve, button-up shirts, start by moving the iron over the collar and cuffs, then the arms, and finally the front and back. Working from the outside prevents missing spots and bunching up the material, creating new creases. When ironing pants, use long strokes going up each leg.
