Electronics are among the more challenging items to pack during a move. Glass parts can shatter, knobs can break off, and internal components can sustain serious wear. Here, review electronics packing tips professional movers routinely dispense to help clients keep their investments intact.

Moving Electronic Devices the Right Way

1. Use Original Packaging Whenever Possible

Original packaging includes the padding and other supplies necessary for keeping your electronics fully protected during transit. If you don’t have original packaging available, consult your owner’s manuals for storage instructions.

Use moving supplies such as anti-static bubble wrap and tape to create protective barriers around your devices. Keep them dust-free by wrapping products in linens or clean paper. Never use newspaper since the ink can rub off and scratch screens.

2. Disassemble Where You Can

moversTake out CDs, toner cartridges, and batteries before packing the electronics to prevent breakage and leaks. Also, remove the cords and use color stickers to label them. Use small, sealable baggies to house these and other small accessories, such as external hard drives. If delicate items, such as hard drives and cartridges, need extra protection, add layers of bubble wrap.

3. Keep Devices From Rubbing Together

Save space by packing smaller electronic items together in sturdy cardboard boxes. Prevent them from rubbing against each other by wrapping everything separately in thick bubble wrap or other non-conductive material. Use additional bubble wrap to fill spaces in the box so the electronics move as little as possible during transport. Keep the boxes closed with quality packing tape to prevent dust infiltration.

4. Alert Your Movers

Label all of your electronics boxes as “fragile” and show them to your movers so they take extra care. You may decide to keep some electronics, such as your work laptop, with you during the move; however, it is still a good idea to use the original packaging or keep the device(s) in a well-sealed box.
