Traffic tickets aren’t the only consequence of committing a driving violation. In Missouri, motorists may also receive driver’s license points for the infraction. Over time, earning too many of these points can lead to license restrictions or suspension. To help you stay in good standing, here’s a closer look at how Missouri’s license point system works and how to keep your numbers from rising.

How Does the Point System Work?

All Missouri drivers start with zero points on their license. However, drivers who commit certain offenses behind the wheel will have points added to their licenses accordingly. For example, speeding or failing to stop at a stop sign can result in anywhere from two to four points being added to one’s license. More serious convictions, such as DWI or unlicensed driving, can result in up to 12 points.

If you pass a point threshold within a specific period, the state may revoke or suspend your license. Earning eight points within an eight-month period, for instance, can result in a license suspension between 30 and 90 days. If you accumulate 12 or more points in 12 months, the state can revoke your driving privileges for an entire year.

What Can You Do to Limit Points?

Wait & Drive Cautiously

Points don’t last forever. If you don’t commit any moving violations for a year after earning points, the total on your license will be lowered by one-third. If you drive without any offenses for two years, the remaining points will be reduced by one-half, and if you go three years without any traffic offenses, the points will be lowered to zero.

Complete a Driver Improvement Program

Some motorists, such as those receiving their first moving violation, may have the opportunity to reduce the impact of the offense by enrolling in a Driver Improvement Program (DIP). After successful completion of an accredited program, the points may be removed.

Hire an Attorney

If you’ve received a traffic ticket and are worried about its impact on your driver’s license, consult a qualified attorney who is familiar with motorist violations. Depending on the situation, your lawyer may have the charges dropped by proving that you weren't at fault or that your rights were violated at the time of ticketing. In other cases, they may be able to reduce the charge from a moving violation to a non-moving violation, which would prevent points from being added to your license.
