When upgrading a septic system or building on undeveloped land in an area that isn't connected to a municipal sewer system, you will need to have a septic system installed. However, before choosing a septic system and hiring a team to install it, you need to have the soil tested. If you're unfamiliar with professional soil testing, review this guide to learn more about the service and why it's necessary.

What to Know About Professional Soil Testing

What is soil testing?

A soil test is an evaluation of various layers of soil to determine what type of septic system can be installed and where a septic system can be properly installed. In Wisconsin a septic system professional will complete at least 3 soil borings and at least one pit large enough for a man to enter to observe the soil conditions.

By digging three to five holes, the team will be able to view each layer of the earth to gauge drainage capabilities,  groundwater limitation marks, and signs of bedrock.

Why is it necessary?

soil testing

In Wisconsin a complete soil test is required before a sanitary permit can be applied for, and septic system installation can occur. Without performing this assessment, we cannot begin construction plans and the permit application process.

In addition to receiving the proper permits, soil testing helps you choose the right location for the septic system. You can rest easy knowing that wastewater will safely and effectively filter through the system without harming the water table or surrounding land.

When should soil testing occur?

Ideally on a sunny day so the soil conditions can be best observed.  If the soil is frozen at any of the treatment layers a soil test cannot be preformed.  Plan ahead, depending on the site the County or State wastewater specialist may need to be involved to help determine the best septic system design and location.  Wet or dry conditions are not a big factor but super wet or dry soils make testing more difficult.

How can I prepare for the process?

We have our own excavator to dig the needed test holes to conduct the test. Prior to coming to the site we will contact diggers hotline to mark the public utilities that may already be on the property and the owner will need to let us know it there are any private utilities on the property.  To prepare for their arrival, remove any vehicles or hazards from the property so that we can navigate the area with ease. If you have pets, make sure they're kept away from the equipment.
