The summer and early fall months in Kentucky are hot and humid enough that air conditioning is a business essential. Unfortunately, problems sometimes arise that require a reputable HVAC contractor. To help you keep your workers and customers comfortable, below are some common commercial AC issues and how to avoid them.

3 Prevalent Commercial Air Conditioning Problems

1. Unusual Noises

Strange sounds coming from the AC can arise for numerous reasons. A belt could be deteriorating and starting to squeal. A loose component can interfere with the fan or motor and result in clattering sounds. A frozen evaporator coil can emit a loud humming. The best way to avoid unusual noises is with preventative maintenance. Have an HVAC contractor inspect your system each spring to ensure it's working properly and to make any necessary, minor repairs before they become emergencies.

2. Clogged Condensate Line

Air conditioners create a lot of condensation as moisture from humid, indoor air collects on the cool metal of the evaporator coil. Normally, this is collected and drained outside through the condensate line. However, algae and mildew sometimes form within this tube, preventing drainage. When this happens, you may discover moisture dripping from the face of the AC unit. To avoid this, occasionally pour a 50% solution of water and bleach into the condensate line to kill off any algae or mildew growth.

3. Refrigerant Leaks

Air conditioners work by collecting indoor heat and transferring it outdoors using a fluid with a very low boiling point called a refrigerant. The fluid flows through a closed system of tubes that run from indoors to outdoors and back again. Unfortunately, any leaks in the system allow the refrigerant to seep out. If this happens, heat transfer can't take place, and your AC will start blowing warm air. Leaks often occur because of a worn valve, accumulator, or capillary tube, and you can circumvent these with regular AC maintenance and yearly inspections.
