Proper lawn care helps all types of grass thrive, but some species work better in certain climates and soils. Wisconsin accommodates cool-season grasses best, and portions of the state are prone to droughts. As you consider what to ask a landscaping company to install in your yard, you’ll need to know which grasses suit your environment and preferences.

Which Types of Grasses Thrive in Wisconsin?

1. Tall Fescue

Decently tolerant of heat, shade, and salt, this type of lawn fares well in droughts and is fairly low-maintenance. Although it requires a lot of overseeding, it features wide blades that grow densely and create a classic, healthy look for your lawn. If you want to enjoy an attractive yard without much lawn care, this is the best choice.

2. Fine Fescue

Several types of fine fescues are available for lawns, including sheep, chewing, hard, and red varieties. However, they all share certain traits, such as a high tolerance for shade and little need for irrigation and fertilizer. They also thrive in soil pH levels that don’t support other options. Since their blades are thin and soft, they’re prone to damage in high-traffic areas, but only require lawn mowing every few weeks.

3. Perennial Ryegrass

However, since it has a medium tolerance of cold weather, it has a shorter life during the cold season. It grows mostly in bunches rather than spreading, so mix it with other types of grass to create variety in your yard.

4. Kentucky Bluegrass

As one of the most popular types of grass in the region, this option has a rich green color and sturdy texture. It spreads once it grows and has a high resistance to disease and drought. Although it thrives best when exposed to sunlight, it does well in the shade, too. You just have to be willing to give it three months or so to grow.
