How to Choose the Right Lawn Mower for Your Property
For most homeowners, mowing the lawn is required on a weekly or biweekly basis. Having the right equipment for this task can make it go a lot smoother and quicker. The first step is to gauge how big your yard is. Here's a look at how to use size to determine which lawn mower will make cutting much less of a chore.
Up to a Quarter Acre
A lawn under 10,890 square feet, which is one-fourth of an acre, will often take less than an hour to mow. A walk-behind model is plenty effective at handling this type of work and will be easier to maneuver in a limited space.
For the best results, consider a battery-powered push mower. This standard model can cover the entire property in a single battery charge and is also relatively quiet to prevent bothering your neighbors.
If you have a sloped yard, a self-propelled battery mower is probably a better choice. This option costs a little more due to its larger battery, but the motor powering the wheels will make it much easier to push.
A Quarter Acre to Half an Acre
At this stage, a walk-behind mower is still enough to get the job done, but it’s not out of the question to look at riding models, especially if you don’t want to devote a lot of time to the project. For many, a self-propelled gas mower makes the task an easy one, but these models are much louder and could have a bigger effect on your neighbors. If it takes you longer than an hour to mow the grass and you're worried about the sound, getting a second battery for a battery-propelled mower can be a good compromise.
A Half Acre or More
A push mower is not a realistic option for most people at this size. If you don’t want to spend several hours of your busy weekend mowing the lawn, upgrade to a riding lawn mower.
A lawn tractor, which is basically a traditional front-engine mower, is probably the least expensive option and is great at providing an even cut. For more maneuverability and the ability to cut large areas of grass in a few minutes, consider a zero-turn radius mower. A garden tractor is also excellent for large properties, and their powerful engines and heavy-duty tires and suspension allow them to attach trailers and other accessories needed for more intensive work.
