From plowing to planting, tractors can serve many valuable purposes on your property. This piece of farm equipment is a major investment, so it pays to weigh all options thoroughly before making a purchase. To help narrow the selection, here are a few points to keep in mind during the search.

3 Factors to Think About When Tractor Shopping

1. What You Need It For

First, think about what you plan to do on the property. If you work the land for seasonal harvest, for example, the vehicle should have connectors for tillers, plows, disc harrows, cultivators, and any other attachments you might use. Subcompact models are often capable of performing these tasks, while compact and utility models are designed for heavy-duty jobs. You should also consider your future farming needs and buy equipment that can accommodate additional acreage you might buy.

2. Layout of the Landscape

tractorsWalk through the property and take note of where trees, fences, boulders, and other obstructions are located. To prevent injuries and equipment damage, the tractor should be small enough to easily navigate around these obstacles. If you have a wide-open field, it should be large enough to cover a lot of ground quickly.

3. Horsepower Requirements

How you plan to use the tractor will also make it easier to figure out how much horsepower it should have. Brake horsepower and PTO horsepower are the two ratings a sales representative will go over at the dealership. Mention how many attachments you plan to use, as PTO horsepower goes towards operating the implements.
