Even though Georgia winters start late, end early, and remain relatively mild, you still need to properly prepare your lawn mower before putting it away for the season. This helps it run better and last longer with fewer problems when the warmth returns in spring. The following tips will get yours ready for its vacation.

3 Tips for Winterizing Your Lawn Mower

1. Change the Oil

The first step is to change the mower’s engine oil. That way, the oil sitting in the crankcase is clean and fresh instead of contaminated with moisture and acidic combustion byproducts. The oil will still be in good shape come spring, and you can start the machine right up without having to mess around with maintenance.

Avoid the cheap stuff, if you can. High-quality lubricants pay for themselves by extending engine life, running more cleanly, and preventing problems.

2. Remove the Battery

lawn mowers in Milledgeville, GACold weather can cause the battery to discharge prematurely. To prevent this from happening, remove the battery and clean it with a soft, dry towel. Store it in a cool, dry place indoors—a basement is ideal—away from flammable materials.

For best results after an extended period of disuse, attach it to a 12-volt charger and top off the voltage next spring.

3. Add Fuel Stabilizer

Unless you store it in an airtight container, gasoline will start to go bad after about 30 days. Fuel stabilizers are a mix of lubricants and antioxidants that bond with the fuel to prevent this from happening.

The stabilizer inhibits evaporation and prevents the formation of sticky resins that can gum up your lawn mower's carburetor. You can buy fuel stabilizer at any lawn equipment or gardening store.
