For many people, pets are more than companions, they’re a best friend and part of the family. If that’s you, it makes sense you would want to include your four-legged pal in one of the biggest days of your life. But before you walk with your pet down the aisle, veterinarians say you should consider these four factors.

What Veterinarians Want You to Consider Before Including a Pet in Your Wedding

1. Your Pet’s Temperament

Consider your pet’s temperament when deciding whether to include them in the wedding and how. Weddings are supposed to be a dreamy, blissful event, but with so many moving parts, things don’t always go smoothly. If your pet has socialization issues or requires constant supervision, this may add to the chaos. Some animals also get stressed in crowds or when their humans are emotional, which may cause them to act out. In these cases, it may be best to leave them at home. You can always include them in a photo shoot before the big day.

2. Your Guests

veterinarianIn addition to considering how your pet feels about people, it’s important to consider your guests’ feelings about animals. This is particularly important with dogs, as some people are afraid of them and may be anxious at the event with your pooch around, no matter how gentle your pet may be. Also, consider allergies to avoid being interrupted by sneezing and coughing during your vows. Make sure your guests are aware there will be a pet present so they, and you, can make the appropriate arrangements.

3. Hiring a Handler

Between getting ready, greeting guests, and photo shoots, you and your wedding party will be occupied most of the day and likely won’t have much time to look after your pet. Hire a handler instead to watch after your pet for the day. They’ll ensure your animal is fed, hydrated, and exercised to keep them from getting too anxious. If you want suggestions, your veterinarian can likely provide a few.

4. Playing to Their Strengths

Everyone’s got talent, including your pet. They may be the rambunctious type, well-suited for running down the aisle, rings in tow; or, they may be subdued and able to sit still comfortably during the vows. If you have a feline friend that is leash trained, they could be led by a ring bearer down the aisle. Or, they may be better off hanging out in the dressing room for adorable photos before and after the ceremony.
