Women require certain health care testing that is different from what men require. Gynecologists provide specialized care to address those needs, including Pap smears. If you're a young woman unfamiliar with this process and about to undergo it for the first time, here's what you can expect.

What a Pap Smear Involves

A Pap smear is a simple medical procedure that helps detect cancer in the cervix, which is the lower, narrow end of the uterus. It can also help catch certain infections and inflammation. During the test, a gynecologist will use a tiny brush to remove cells from the cervix and the surrounding area. Then, they'll examine them under a microscope.

Early detection of cell changes by Pap smears improves the chance of stopping cervical cancer from developing. It also allows for better success in curing the disease if it is present.

How Often It Should Be Done

Many factors determine how often the screening needs to be done. A patient's age, health history, and results from the last Pap smear can influence the testing frequency. However, it should generally begin when a woman turns 21.

From the initial appointment until the age of 29, you should plan to get a Pap smear every three years. The recommended schedule will change when a woman is between 30 to 65 years old. During this time, you'll need a Pap smear every three years or every five if you have it done alongside an HPV test. After age 65, you can discontinue the screening.

A gynecologist could recommend more frequent testing or continued screenings after age 65 if you have human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), are receiving chemotherapy, or were previously treated for cervical cancer. You might not need a Pap smear if your cervix and uterus have been removed in a hysterectomy and you do not have a history of cervical cancer.
