Keeping your home comfortable throughout the winter season often means running your heating unit every day, putting a strain on the system, as well as your wallet. However, if you help your heating system do its job more efficiently, you’ll enjoy lower utility bills every month and extend the life of your unit. Use the proven strategies below to maximize your system’s hard work and stay cozy when it’s cold out.

How to Boost the Efficiency of Your Heating System

1. Install a Programmable Thermostat

A programmable thermostat is an instant and easy way to improve your efficiency. Program the heat to turn up when you’re home, then maintain lower temperatures at night or when you’re away from the house.

heating systemsRecommended temperatures are between 68 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit when you’re home, and between 62 to 66 degrees when you’re asleep or away.  However, never turn your system off completely, even if you’re leaving home for multiple days. While this may seem like a good way to save, the heating system will have to put in more effort to heat a much colder home when you get back, making this approach less efficient.

2. Close Extra Rooms

There’s no point in heating spaces of the home that you’re not using. If there’s an area that you won’t be going into, such as an unused guest room, close the vents in those rooms and then close the doors. The heated air will be redirected to the rooms you use the most.

3. Use Your Curtains

Windows are a weak spot in your home, since they’re not lined with insulation like your walls are. Install heavy curtains and keep them closed to lock in your heat. The only exception is when the sun is shining directly on a window; at this time, it’s best to open up the curtains. The UV rays will enter the home through the window and turn into heat, so you can use the sun as a free and natural heating source.
