Whether you have a laser printer at work or keep it at home, periodic cleaning is necessary to keep the machine in good working condition. Always take safety precautions when cleaning your printer, as fine toner particles can end up on the skin and in the lungs without the proper measures. Open nearby windows, turn off any fans or air conditioners, and wear a mask and latex gloves when performing laser printer maintenance.

Turn your laser printer off and let it sit for at least an hour before cleaning:

• Remove & Vacuum: Open the printer to carefully remove the toner cartridge or bottle. Use a dry, lint-free brush or fine-bristled paint brush to clean the toner cavity. Suck up any spilled toner with a toner vacuum. Never use a regular vacuum as it cannot trap fine toner particles.
• Wipe The Cartridge: Wipe your toner cartridge using an “activated” toner cloth. Activate this special cloth by slowly stretching it. Discard the cloth after you’re finished since it cannot be reused.
• Clean The Wires: Clean the machine’s wires using cotton swabs dipped in isopropyl rubbing alcohol. Use a gentle motion to wipe the top and bottom of these delicate wires. Do not use your vacuum or brush to clean the wires; it can result in costly damage.
• Dust the Rollers & Separation Pads: Wipe the printer’s rollers and separation pads using a slightly damp, lint-free cloth. Keep your gloves on to avoid touching the rollers with your bare hands.
• Clean the Exterior: Dust the exterior of your laser printer with a dry, clean cloth. Add isopropyl alcohol to the cloth for a deeper clean. You can also use a microfiber duster to clean the printer’s exterior.
