Laser printers are a popular piece of equipment used in both businesses and households. We rely on laser printers to produce quality hard copies of files found on our computers, laptops, and tablets. Although many people utilize the technology regularly, most don’t really know how these printers work and what they do. Here is a closer look at the process of a laser printer and what it is used for.
Laser Technology
Laser printers use tiny lasers to convert electronic data into words, numbers, and images to be printed in ink on paper stock. Circuits in the printer decipher the electronic data sent when you hit “print.” A tiny laser beam reflects off a mirror that moves across the printer’s positively charged drum to create a static electricity pattern of the information. This erases the positive charge and creates a negative area with the image instead. Only the area that must remain white maintains a positive charge.
By way of an ink roller, positively charged toner is spread across the paper, with the positive ink attaching to the negatively charged image. If you’ve ever touched the toner, you’ll notice it feels powdery, but it’s those tiny particles that attach to the paper to create your printout as it moves toward the drum. The last step relies on a heating element that adheres the toner to the paper fibers and sets the print. This is why your hard copy feels a little warm when it’s fresh out of the printer.
Uses for Laser Printers
Laser printers come with a host of benefits that make printing much more efficient. These machines can turn out several pages in less than a minute, and the cost per page in toner is considerably less than inkjet varieties. They are also relatively quiet during operation, and the output is crisp, clear, and high quality.
Because of these benefits, laser printers are essential for businesses that rely on producing paperwork and copies for customers and clients quickly. In seconds you can hand over an invoice, receipt, or information packet. Printouts are also vivid and easy to read.
Laser printers have boosted the printing industry, particularly independent companies that create books, magazines, pamphlets, and other materials for their business. Using an in-house laser printer ensures professional quality results for any publications or marketing materials.
