Your toilet tank has a lot of components, and if any of them malfunction, your toilet might run constantly. If you don’t fix the problem, you can waste a lot of water and drive up your water bill. To help you identify and solve the issue, here are a few causes and how to know when you need to call a plumber

3 Reasons Your Toilet Might Be Constantly Running

1. Broken Flapper

When you push the handle on the toilet tank, it raises a rubber flapper covering a hole, allowing the water in the tank to exit the hole and enter the tank. Then the flapper falls over the hole again, sealing water in the tank. If the flapper is too old, it may begin cracking, creating only a partial seal over the hole. You’ll need to call your plumber to replace the flapper so that the hole is fully sealed.

2. Stuck Handle

plumberSometimes, the flapper in the tank is fine, but the toilet handle has broken or accumulated debris. This can cause the handle to get stuck, leaving the flapper partially open. If you notice the handle sitting at an odd angle or not returning to its original position after you flush, this may be the culprit.

3. Broken Float Ball or Arm

To keep your toilet from filling past the maximum level, your toilet tank is equipped with a float that rises as the water does. When the float ball rises to a certain height, the movement in the float arm turns off the fill valve. However, if the ball is getting stuck against the wall of the tank, the fill valve may continue running. If you lift the arm and the water stops flowing, you’ve found the problem. If the ball is aging and cracked, it could be taking on water and sitting below the surface. In this case, you’ll need to have a plumber replace it.
