Whether you only grill during the summer months or you brave the winter weather to cook outdoors, your gas grill needs some regular care to stay in peak condition and function without problems. These appliances are low-maintenance and don't require a lot of attention. However, the time you do spend cleaning and caring for them pays off in longer life spans and fewer issues. Here's what you can do to ensure your grill lasts for years to come.

How to Take Care of a Gas Grill

1. Invest in a Cover

It's a myth that covering a gas grill can cause rust to develop quicker. Buy a high-quality cover designed for your specific model, and keep the appliance covered when it's not in use. This feature protects the device from the elements and prevents it from getting dirty. It can also help keep pests from building nests inside or under the grill.

2. Spot Clean with Every Use

Before you cook, preheat the grill to soften or burn off any residue on the grates. Brush them before placing food on top of them. When you are done cooking, turn the grill up to high to burn off left-behind drippings and grease. This prevents excess grime from building up and affecting the quality of your food. It also keeps the metal grate from deteriorating prematurely.

3. Deep Clean Annually

Deep cleaning your gas grill once or twice a year keeps it in good condition and gives you the chance to inspect the parts and make necessary repairs. Remove the grill's flame barriers, and soak them in hot soapy water before scrubbing them clean. Wipe down the burners with a damp sponge to remove grease and grime, and brush out the interior of the grill to remove large chunks of charred material. Empty and clean the grease pan, and wash the outside of the appliance. Once all the parts are back in place, fire up the device to dry damp parts and burn off excess soap residue.

4. Check the Gas Lines

If you're storing your gas grill for the winter, disconnect the gas lines and store the propane tank in a safe, well-ventilated area. Otherwise, check the gas line occasionally by covering it with soapy water. If bubbles form anywhere along the line or the connections, there is a leak that needs to be repaired before you use the grill again.
