Thunderstorm anxiety is incredibly common among dogs. Because their hearing is so much stronger than ours, even the lowest rumbles can be frightening. Experts also suspect dogs are sensitive to air pressure and static electricity, both of which can be overwhelming in inclement weather. Whether your pups whine, pace, or hide until a storm passes, here are a few tips for easing their anxiety, from playing white noise to asking your veterinarian for medication.

How to Comfort Your Dogs During Thunderstorms

1. Compete With the Noise

When the weather is especially severe, it may not be possible to drown out all the thunder. By playing music, watching TV, or turning on a white noise machine, however, you can make it much less noticeable. For maximum impact, set up a "safe space" for pups in the quietest room in your home with lots of blankets and pillows, and put the speakers in there with them.

2. Administer a Mild Sedative

In cases of severe thunderstorm anxiety, a fast-acting benzodiazepine may be the answer. Your veterinarian can prescribe this anti-anxiety medication if your dog is in good health otherwise. For the best results, follow the forecast, and administer the meds according to your vet's instructions 30 to 60 minutes before the storm starts.

3. Attempt Desensitization

You can find hours of thunderstorm sounds for free online. Pick one that resembles the weather in your area, and play it softly for your dogs over and over. Increase the volume gradually, but only after your dog is totally comfortable with the current volume. If you're diligent about this approach, your pups may eventually become desensitized to the sounds, and they won't feel anxious at all when the next storm strikes.
