These days, it might seem like pennies hold such a small value that they have become obsolete. However, before you give them up for fountain wishes, you might want to give your pennies a second look. Some hold a significant amount of value for coin collectors. Here are three examples of valuable pennies still floating around.

3 Pennies of Significant Value

1. 1944-D Lincoln Penny on Steel

This penny is considered valuable because instead of being made out of copper, it was minted in steel. After 1944, U.S. mints began using copper alloys to make pennies again, and they have continued to do so to this day. While over 430 million of these steel pennies were made, they could be valued at over $100,000.

2. 1969-S Doubled Die Obverse

This unique penny was all thanks to a doubled die error, which occurs when a die stamps onto a blank coin more than once and shifts a bit in between each pressing. The result is a doubled or shadowed effect that is easiest to notice in text. In this 1969 edition, the error occurs on the words “LIBERTY” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.” Since there were only around 1,000 ever made, these coins can go for up to $75,000.

3. The 1992 Close AM

This penny minted in the early 90s is sought after due to a rare error that occurred when stamping the design. While most of this year’s pennies feature a clear definition between the “A” and “M” in “AMERICA,” around 250,000 have the two letters touching at the base. A used one can sell for up to $3,000. Those kept in like-new condition by conscientious coin collectors could go for around $20,000.
