Throughout the history of the world, cultures and nations have continued to devise unique ways to exchange goods and services. When coins became the norm, design and artistry began to play a role in the minting process. If you’re interested in learning about some of the lesser-known favorites of rare coin dealers, take a look at the list below.
3 Unique Coins From Around the World
1. The Stella Coin
Long before the EU, multiple countries in Europe attempted to establish a universal currency in 1865. It was called the Latin Monetary Union, and each country was allowed to produce its own coins, even though they would be equivalent in value to the others. When the U.S. wanted to get involved, they designed the Stella coin, a gold coin worth four dollars. Unfortunately, the LMU was rejected by Congress and disbanded after the First World War, resulting in the coin design being scrapped. A few of the designs were brought to life in 2007. The Stella’s obverse features the profile of a woman, who symbolizes Liberty, and the reverse depicts a five-pointed star.
2. The Somali Republic 2004 Commemorative Dollar
This fascinating coin features an irregular yet familiar shape—an electric guitar! The 1.75-inch shape was chosen to mark the 50th anniversary of the Fender Stratocaster and celebrate rock-and-roll music. One side of this coin is enameled, like a piece of jewelry. It comes in multiple styles, such as a pink star Guitar, a red-and-white Fender Stratocaster, and an American Flag Gibson Flying V. It can be used as legal tender for one dollar, but it’s more often collected by rare coin dealers.
3. Riga Technical University 2012 Commemorative Coin
In 2012, the University of Riga celebrated its 150th anniversary. Since it’s the oldest technical university in the Baltic States and institution of higher learning in Latvia, Kristaps Ģelzis designed a special coin for it. This unique coin can be taken apart—it’s actually two pieces. It also features a hologram, depicting the years 1862 (the university’s founding) and 2012. The coin is worth one lats and is comprised of .925 silver. Only 3000 were produced at the Mint of Finland, making this coin not just innovative, but highly prized by rare coin dealers.
