Many coin collectors are also bullion investors.  Having some hard assets in your portfolio can be a good idea in unsure times.

American Gold Eagle

In 1986 the United States began minting this coin from gold that was mined in the US.  The obverse (front) design is modeled after the St. Gaudens gold coin for the early 20th century.  On the reverse (back) is a family of eagles.  It has legal tender status meaning the US government guarantees the weight and purity.  Unlike other gold coins it’s made with a mix of three metals: gold, silver, and copper.

Canadian Maple Leaf Coin

Back in the 1980s, this coin became popular due to the purity. The first years were made from .999 fine gold, later it was upgraded to .9999 pure.  This gorgeous coin has a maple leaf on one side to honor Canada, and Queen Elizabeth II on the other.

Chinese Panda Coin

In production since 1987, this is the official bullion coin from China. Made of .999 pure gold, this coin features a different design of the panda each year with a picture of the Temple of Heaven on the opposite side.  Many collectors like this coin for the changing images of the Pandas.  Because the design changes are so collectible some years had smaller mintages and sell for more than their bullion value.

Australian Kangaroo

The Kangaroo is another coin that changes design every year.  Made almost entirely of pure gold (99.9%), it features the kangaroo on one side and Queen Elizabeth II on the other.  Like the Panda, some collectors strive to have one of each design.

British Sovereign

As one of the most recognized world gold coins they have been enjoying popularity since the reign of King Henry VII. The obverse has a portrait of the ruler of England and the reverse features St. George slaying a dragon, which is sure to delight newcomers to the hobby.  This coin, unlike the others we have mentioned, contains .2354 ounce fine gold.
