When organizing a collection, it can be hard to find a balance between showing it off and keeping the items safe. If you are an avid coin collector, for example, Coins Plus in Cincinnati, OH, understands this struggle all too well. To help you devise the perfect coin display, they offer the following list of do’s and do nots.

Do:

Choose a safe container.

There are a variety of ways in which to store coins, from folders and albums with small compartments to air-tight plastic display cases. However, one of the safest options is coin slabs. With these cases, your prized collection will be sonically sealed in a PVC-free plastic. They will also be professionally graded and guaranteed genuine by the grading company giving you peace of mind.

Store them in a safe environment.

While the container is essential, the area in which you put the container can also affect the condition of your coins. For the best results, store your collection in a dry, cool area that does not experience major fluctuations in temperature or humidity. A bank safe deposit box is a great choice, but if you are using a home safe having a descant inside to absorb moisture is recommended.

DO NOT:

Clean the coins.

coin collectorTo preserve your collection, you should handle the coins as little as possible. When you do touch them, hold only the edges or wear cotton gloves. The oils in your skin can significantly damage the surface of the coins, as can many cleaning products and tools. In fact, coin dealers advise against ever cleaning your coins, as it can drastically lower their value.

Wrap them in acidic materials.

As a temporary safeguard until you purchase a permanent container you may think to use an old holder or even a paper envelope.   However, it is important to realize that many seemingly safe materials contain acids that can be devastating to old metal artifacts. Ask a professional dealer which materials are safe to use to store your particular coins in.
