Once the only convenient choice for home listeners, vinyl records faded out when CDs—then digital streaming services—began offering longer listening times, crisper quality, and more cost-effective methods for musicians to distribute music. However, over the past decade, vinyl has experienced a significant market revitalization. But is it worth getting into? Here are a few benefits and disadvantages of listening to records.

Advantages

Audio Fidelity

Audiophiles comprise a significant portion of the market for vinyl records because the mastering is often richer than in digital releases. With the enhanced dynamics on a record, you may be able to hear more of the “depth” of the music. However, if you’re not obsessed with audio fidelity, you may not fully enjoy this benefit—or even notice the difference.

Community

Many people are drawn to vinyl because they find other people with whom to celebrate the music. Extreme vinyl hunters are known as cratediggers, and they’re often musicians hunting down a record for their next DJ set.

However, even casual vinyl listeners can enjoy the camaraderie and experience the thrill of finding a new record they love.

Noise

While the audio fidelity of a vinyl record is a selling point for many people, the music can also be accompanied by unwanted sounds. Surface noise, the distinctive vinyl crackle, is caused by record imperfections, dust, and overall wear.

Some people find the buzzing or hissing charming—a characteristic part of the experience—but others find it annoying and distracting.

When it comes to your wallet, streaming is a clear winner over vinyl. Many new vinyl records cost upwards of $20, while music streaming usually uses a flat monthly fee to access millions of songs.

If you’re a new collector, expect to sink a lot of money into building your vinyl library. Also, the equipment you need to listen to vinyl isn’t cheap; a high-quality turntable and speaker system can set you back hundreds of dollars.
