When your septic and plumbing system encounters issues, it can be messy and frustrating. Understanding some of the most common causes of leaky and broken pipes will help you prevent them and spot potential issues before they worsen. Here are several of the most common causes of broken or leaking plumbing.

What Can Cause Broken Pipes?

1. Corrosion

Metal pipes can last for 20 years or more, depending on the exact material, but they're susceptible to rust, even galvanized ones. Older plumbing that’s beginning to rust may cause your water to taste different, be discolored, and leave reddish-brown stains on the appliances and fixtures.

Rusted pipes often clog when corrosive particles accumulate on the walls, catching more debris and weakening the material. Corrosion can thin the metal to make it more susceptible to leaks or bursts or even eat all the way through the pipe, creating a serious problem.

2. Tree Roots

Tree roots can dent and puncture pipes, causing leaks, clogs, and bursts. Root systems of older or larger trees can cover a broad area underground, so it’s recommended that trees be kept 10 to 20 feet away from the underground pipes. If your trees are close to your home and you notice diminishing water pressure or a worsening clog, it’s likely that tree roots have damaged your plumbing.

3. Clogs

Severe clogs can do more than interrupt or weaken your supply of water. If a clog blocks off most of a pipe, it allows pressure to build up behind it as the water struggles to push through. This can cause leaks as the pressure rises, especially if it’s near a joint or the pipe is weakened by roots or rust. Be mindful of what you flush to minimize the risk of clogs, and have clogs cleared as soon as you notice signs of them, like weakened water pressure and debris coming from your pipes.

4. Driving Over Them

Pipes and other aspects of your septic system weren’t designed to withstand the pressure of vehicles or heavy equipment being driven over them. Driving through your yard or having a driveway laid over pipes can cause them to crack, especially those in the drainfield, creating leaks and making them more prone to further damage. If you aren’t sure of the layout of your septic system, a qualified plumber may be able to help map it out.
