Acid-free refers to paper which, through the manufacturing process and buffering (adding alkaline reserve, like calcium carbonate), have neutralized and protected the paper from acids in the base materials. Archival papers are premium papers that are made with 100% cotton rag, a base material that is not acidic, does not contain lignins and is very durable with a greater longevity over less expensive acid-free papers. Both types of papers are much more resistant to environmental damage than more acidic paper stock (like newsprint), and won’t turn yellow or brittle with age when stored correctly. While acid-free or archival papers are more expensive than regular paper, they are worth the expense to protect and extend the life of your artwork.
