When you have children, getting them to do what they're told is often tricky, especially when it's as commonplace as brushing their teeth. However, it's critical for preventing cavities and promoting overall oral health. If you're struggling to get your kid to brush twice daily, don't despair; here are a few ways to make it easier and more enjoyable for everyone.

How to Get Your Kids to Brush Their Teeth

1. Lead by Example

Many kids love to emulate their parents. So, make sure to show them you're showing up twice a day and brushing your teeth. Load up both yours and your kid's toothbrush and set a timer for two minutes, spending 30 minutes on each quadrant of your mouth. Of course, this will also help protect your own teeth from cavities, so it's a win for you too!

2. Use Kid-Specific Products

The fun and colorful toothpaste made for kids isn't just a gimmick; it's crafted to be more palatable for them. The common, minty toothpaste adults use can be too intense for kids, especially if they've very young. If you can, get a variety pack; this will give them a chance to find the one they like, and if they ever get tired of a flavor, you already have something new on hand. Other than toothpaste, there are also toothbrushes and floss picks designed for smaller hands that are worth getting. While all of these can be a bit more expensive, the price is minimal compared to filling multiple cavities.

3. Make the Process Fun

Try to infuse some fun into the process. You can play their favorite song or promise them a story after they've finished brushing their teeth. If they're getting older, consider setting up a reward system. Every child is different, but one example of this could be: if they brush their teeth every night for a week or two, then they've earned a trip to the library on the weekend to get a new book or game. You could even increase the value to something like a new toy after a month-long streak of brushing every day!

While these will help prevent cavities, it's no substitute for a routine appointment with a pediatric dentist at John M. Schulte, DMD. Located in Covington, KY, they've provided comprehensive dental services for those throughout Northern Kentucky for 45 years. Whether you need a basic dental exam or orthodontics, they can help. As a family dentistry office, they welcome every family member too. To learn more about everything they can do, visit their website or call (859) 331-0763.
