Taking proper care of your fireplace begins with knowing how it’s constructed. There are many pieces to a traditional fireplace. Before you use yours or schedule a fireplace cleaning, understand the function of each part and potential problems associated with it.

5 Principal Fireplace Parts

1. Hearth

The hearth is the floor of the fireplace. It usually extends out from the wall and is made of a fireproof material such as brick. As a house shifts over time, cracks may appear in the masonry. If cracks compromise a hearth’s structural integrity, tuck-pointing may be needed to repair the damage.

2. Firebox

The firebox is the chamber that contains the fire and your fuel. It’s made of brick, metal, or another fireproof material. Keep your firebox safe by sweeping away the ashes into a fireproof container after a fire is spent and the ashes are cool.

3. Damper

The damper, which sits above the firebox, separates it from the smoke chamber and flue above. It prevents cold air from coming down a chimney into the home when the fireplace isn’t in use. If you forget to open the damper before lighting a fire, smoke will escape into the room, not up the chimney.

4. Smoke Chamber

5. Flue

The flue is the passageway at the top of the damper, which channels smoke and other gases up to the roof. They’re made either of baked clay or stainless steel and are supported by the chimney. The smoke leaves behind a buildup of creosote in the flue. It’s highly flammable and will damage the flue if not swept away. Regular chimney cleaning will prevent the dangerous buildup of creosote.

6. Chimney Crown

The chimney crown, which can be seen from the street or road, is the top of the chimney. Moisture that leaks into the crown may damage the interior of a fireplace. If a bird builds a nest inside the crown, it may block the release of smoke. A chimney cap keeps animals out and protects a fireplace from moisture.
