Standing in line to use the bathroom can be a major inconvenience for large families. Consider adding a bathroom exclusively for the kids during your next home renovation project. Not only will this eliminate long waits, but it also provides youngsters their own space to keep toys, robes, and other items for bath time. Use the following advice to design a room that's perfect for your little ones.

How to Make a Bathroom Kid-Friendly

1. Invest in Scratch- & Stain-Resistant Counters

Kids can be tough on surfaces. Forcefully placing toys, drinking cups, and other items on the counter can leave scratches and scuffs on the surface. Avoid a prematurely worn vanity by investing in a durable, scratch-resistant material, like quartz, for the home renovation. Since this engineered stone isn't naturally porous like other materials, it won't stain from liquid spills.

2. Color Code Plumbing Fixtures

It might take some time for youngsters to memorize which plumbing fixture handles turn on the hot and cold water in the new bathroom. Place visual aids on the sink, shower, and bathtub knobs and levers to make them easier to identify.

Place red adhesive strips on hot controls and blue on cold ones. Consider installing anti-scald valves on plumbing fixtures to prevent kids from burning themselves. These devices mix hot with cold water to lower the temperature of the liquid before it comes out of the faucet.

3. Install Storage Under the Vanity

Young children might not be able to reach medicine cabinets and high shelving, so add deep drawers under the vanity. Include enough room to store toys, toiletries, and towels. Installing a floating vanity can maximize space. The area between the drawers and the floor can be used for additional storage.
