The Anti-Lock Brake System is one of the best automotive safety innovations. Also known as ABS, it's designed to prevent your wheels from accidentally locking up when a driver makes a sudden stop, avoiding skidding. However, although ABS is useful, improper usage can lead to brake repairs. To avoid this, here's what you need to know.

Do:

Maintain firm pressure on the pedal.

Keeping a firm foot on the brake pedal activates the system and keeps it engaged. Even if you feel the ABS starting to vibrate, keep your foot there; it's a sign that it's working. The only time you should take your foot off the pedal while driving is if you know for certain that your car has started to skid; any braking will cause the wheels to lock up and you may lose control.

Keep the tires in good condition.

As valuable as an ABS may be, it will be undermined by a bald tread or under- or over-inflated tires. Not only will they make braking less effective, but they're likely to lead to brake repairs since you'll need to use more pressure to slow down. Check your vehicle’s door for the right tire pressure and check it monthly to ensure it’s the right amount. When your tires have the correct pressure, they have just the right amount of traction for effective handling.

Don't:

Pump the brakes.

If you learned how to drive without an ABS in your car, you know that pumping the brakes helped prevent the wheels from locking up. However, because that is the purpose of the system, doing so is unnecessary; it essentially does it for you.

Furthermore, with an ABS, pumping the brakes actually activates and deactivates the system. Therefore, pumping the brakes with an ABS is something that will most directly lead to brake repairs.

Remove your hands from the steering wheel.

Although ABS prevents the wheels from locking up, it doesn't affect the steering wheel In fact, avoiding the lock-up from happening makes it easier for you to steer your vehicle. So, don't forget to pay attention to the road and adjust your trajectory accordingly even when it's engaged.
