If your project involves cutting wood or felling trees, few tools make the job faster or easier than a chainsaw. However, the power of a chainsaw also makes it a uniquely dangerous tool, capable of causing serious injuries even in experienced hands. Before you head down to the hardware store, knowing what to do and what to avoid will help you handle a chainsaw safely.

Do:

Use both hands.

If the chainsaw hits a knot or other obstruction in the wood, it can suddenly kick back toward you. No matter what the angle, always use both hands when operating a chainsaw, and hold the grips firmly anytime the chain is moving.

Stay out of the line of the saw.

Don’t:

Cut from a ladder.

Falling off a ladder is dangerous, but falling with a chainsaw in your hands can be disastrous. A bucking chainsaw increases the chances of falling, which is why you should never use one while standing on a ladder.

Cut above your head.

A chainsaw held over your head is more difficult to control, so even minor hiccups can cause serious injuries. To minimize the risk of injury, avoid cutting anything above shoulder height. If you need to cut something higher, get a harness or a temporary platform from your local hardware store.
