Staining your deck every few years will protect the surface from moisture and rot, but even professional builders sometimes neglect the joists underneath. Taking the time to waterproof the joists before laying down the surface can add years to the useful life of your deck and keep it looking great. Here are a few deck supply and construction tips to help protect your outdoor living space.

How to Protect Deck Joists

1. Use Flashing Tape

Flashing tape is specially designed to seal the tops of deck joists and beams against moisture intrusion. This essential deck supply is available in a variety of widths to cover both single and double joists, and it's also easy to install. Simply cut the tape to measure, peel off the backing, and apply the material to the top of each framing member.

2. Choose Pressure-Treated Lumber

While you’ll likely want a beautiful, hardy wood like redwood or cedar for the decking material, the materials underneath may need more protection. Pressure-treated lumber is more resistant to moisture and can protect against termite activity.

3. Coat the Joists

If your deck is going to be elevated, you may not want flashing tape visible. In this case, you might want to coat each member in a water-resistant sealant. Because joists aren’t exposed to the sun, the sealant should protect the joists for years to come.

4. Use Joist Hangers

Joist hangers are special deck supply materials that keep framing members from touching. These small separators put up to an eighth of an inch between the load-bearing joists and cross-beams, leaving nowhere for water to get trapped. They also provide a stronger connection than traditional screws and nails.

5. Opt for Hidden Connectors

Screwing through the decking boards creates tiny holes that can trap moisture, eventually rotting the joists away from inside. Hidden fasteners connect to the underside of the boards so that air can circulate. There are several options available, but most consist of clips or fasteners that attach to the tops of the joists.
