An at-home asphalt basketball court is a dream that often starts in childhood and follows into adulthood. Now that you're a homeowner, you have the space and budget to make this dream come true. However, it's important to plan the process carefully. Here are the main steps to follow throughout this project.

How to Install an Asphalt Basketball Court

1. Define the Area

Measure out the area where you plan to put the basketball court. You'll need a space that's at least 30 feet by 30 feet, as that is the standard size for a half-court. Clearly mark the area using rope or caution tape to alert anyone walking or driving through the area that a project is underway.

2. Excavate

Asphalt

Once you've chosen the perfect spot for the court, it's time to excavate. Dig about eight inches down across the entire area. Remove any large rocks or debris you uncover that could make the future surface uneven.

After the digging is complete and all debris has been removed, level out the soil as much as possible. A metal rake can be helpful for this step.

3. Add a Base

Typically, the company that pours your asphalt will first provide a base material. This is usually some form of crushed stone. Four to six inches of this material should be spread over the layer of soil that you leveled. Then, the base should be compacted with a weighted rolling tool.

4. Pave & Paint

Once the base material has been spread and compacted, it's time to have two to three inches of asphalt poured. Carefully level the surface and compact the asphalt just like the base material. Once the court has fully dried, you can add your hoops, paint the lines, and start enjoying the basketball court.
