Concrete is a versatile product used for many outdoor applications, including patios and pathways. If you install hardscaping surfaces, ensuring the material dries smoothly is integral to the quality of your work. Here are some tips for ensuring a smooth, solid finish every time.

How to Cure Concrete Surfaces

1. Maintain an Optimal Temperature

If possible, schedule your project for the fall or spring. The temperatures should remain around 50 degrees, as chemical hardening can’t take place when the weather is too cold. Conversely, exposure to direct, excessive heat can dry the material out too quickly.

If you work during warm, sunny days, combat the effects of direct sunlight by keeping the area shaded. Use a makeshift barrier, such as canvas stretched over wooden frames, to block out UV rays. Coverings also prevent the concrete from washing away if it rains.

2. Use Water

It can be difficult to maintain the right amount of moisture to achieve a smooth cure. An easy way to promote slow, steady evaporation is moist curing. Simply hose the surface down five to ten times per day for a week after pouring.

Then, fill the area with a foot of water, replacing as needed to maintain the depth. Repeat the process for three days.

3. Be Careful With Weight

Even if the surface looks like it’s solidified, weight can still cause imprints during the first few weeks.

To ensure the integrity of your work, advise your clients to avoid walking over the surface for at least 24 hours. Additionally, they shouldn’t drive over the area or place heavy objects on it for at least ten days.
