The humble penny sometimes seems like more of a nuisance than a form of currency. They clutter up center consoles, jingle around in purses, and collect on top of washing machines across the country. However, those one-cent pieces add up, which is why February 12th is National Lost Penny Day, a chance for you to chase down all those errant coins and put them to use. You might find a few spare dollars to donate to charity or take down to your local credit union.

Celebrate National Lost Penny Day

The History of the Penny

The first pennies, credit uniondesigned by Benjamin Franklin, were minted in 1787. Throughout the 18th century, they depicted either Lady Liberty or the face of a Native American man.

In 1909, to celebrate the centennial anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth, President Theodore Roosevelt commissioned the portrait of Lincoln still seen on the penny today. The penny became the first U.S. coin to feature a picture of a real person.

How to Celebrate

Start by conducting a drawer-by-drawer, pocket-by-pocket search of your house, clothes, and car. If you have children, a scavenger hunt is a great way to turn this celebration into a fun game. You could try competing for who can find the most total coins or try searching for pennies from a particular year.

You can pick up coin wrappers from your credit union. Once you’ve collected a neat pile of pennies and other loose change, you can roll the coins up and add them to your credit union savings account. This way, your money will start earning interest and your children will learn a powerful lesson about the value of the smallest coin.
