If you’re looking for a luxury retreat for your next vacation but aren’t sure where to stay, consider Napa Valley. This famous wine growing region is well-known around the world for its picturesque skylines, temperate weather, and sprawling vineyards. What many wine-lovers may not know, however, is that wine country actually has deep historical roots dating back to the 1700s. Here’s a quick timeline to showcase Napa Valley and it’s growth over the years.

Napa Valley: Then & Now

Where Did the Grapes Come From?

Napa Valley wasn’t always brimming with wineries and luxury retreats. Grape vines were first planted in the region in the late 1700s by missionaries who needed wine for religious masses and ceremonies. Intended strictly for function and not commercial use, this early wine was cultivated using a mixture of grapes and, as a result, was not very good. It wasn’t until Europeans began emigrating to California in the mid to late 1800s and planting European grape varieties that the area began to develop a reputation for its wines.

When Did the First Winery Open?

luxury retreatNapa Valley’s first commercial winery opened its doors in 1861, owned by Charles Krug. Shortly after, other entrepreneurs were inspired to follow suit when the city of Los Angeles announced that any land used for grape-planting would not be taxed. By 1889, more than 140 wineries were operating throughout Napa Valley. These early wine pioneers faced many challenges getting their wineries off the ground, including disease, a saturated global market, and the Prohibition enactment of the 1920s.

How Did the Region Recover?

After Prohibition was repealed, wineries once again attempted to gain a foothold in Napa Valley. Realizing that they needed to band together, a group of seven commercial winemakers formed the Napa Valley Vintners Trade Association® in 1944. Since then, the association has grown to include 550 wineries. Through their collective efforts, including high profile events, global competition, and a commitment to environmental leadership, they’ve helped Napa Valley develop a reputation as one of the top wine regions in the world. Today, it’s one of the top-rated places to enjoy a wide variety of wines from your luxury retreat.
