Because athlete’s foot spreads on contact, prevention is key to avoiding this infection. Fitness-minded individuals can take certain steps to practice good foot care. For example, steer clear of the fungus by wearing shoes in gym locker rooms and public showers, as well as around pools or hot tubs. Always wear closed-toed shoes whenever possible, and never share footwear, socks, or linens with other people—athletes or otherwise. After a swim or shower, dry your feet thoroughly and immediately. The longer your feet are wet or sweaty, the more prone they will be to developing the infection.
