Many boating enthusiasts loathe winter's arrival and the break from their favorite activity. However, not everyone chooses to put their boat away when temperatures drop. For some people, the promise of taking to the brisk waters while breathing in crisp air is just as exciting as summer sailing. Yet, before boarding your vessel, you must ensure that you’re prepared for winter boating. From keeping essential boat accessories on hand to wearing the right clothes, here’s what you need to know.

How to Safely Enjoy Winter Boating

1. Wear Winter Gear

The combination of cold air and moisture can make boating uncomfortable unless you’re wearing the right clothes. Layers made with thick, breathable materials, like flannel and wool, are ideal. You can choose sweaters with high necks and coats that are wind- and water-resistant with adjustable hoods. A ski mask will keep your head and neck dry, but a wool cap and scarf also suffice. Bringing two pairs of gloves is a safe bet, especially if you’re on a fishing boat, where the material may become soaked.

2. Charge the Battery

While some boat batteries can withstand cold temperatures relatively well, they will ultimately freeze at some stage. Keeping them charged prolongs their lifespan in the cold and prevents them from freezing prematurely. You can use a trickle charger when your boat is at rest or remove it completely when the vessel is not in use. You can charge it in a cool, dry location, remembering that the battery should be fully charged when you put it back in the boat, giving it more time to run efficiently and reducing the risk of freezing.

3. Check the Engine

Boat engines take some time to start in the winter. Although it is unlikely to freeze, topping off the coolant and antifreeze can prevent that from happening at all. They’ll stop corrosion from developing and help the engine run efficiently throughout the season by lubricating its vital components.

4. Focus on Warmth

Staying warm is vital to your comfort and well-being on the water. Air-blown and diesel heaters are both effective boat accessories that will keep you comfortable when you’re winter boating. You can swap gas for propane during winter, as it’s an efficient option for heating the cabin and warming water for hot beverages.

5. De-Ice the Boat

A boat can become coated with ice overnight, causing slippery surfaces that pose hazards. However, you can de-ice the deck with some seawater and a scrubbing brush, making sure to wear sturdy boots that prevent slipping and falling while you work.
