Whether you’re a longtime angler or just looking for a new thrill, deep sea fishing is one of the most exciting adventures to be had off the shores of Alaska. While there’s a definite learning curve, learning as much as you can will help you navigate your new experience with greater ease. From searching for the right fishing boat to learning about the species you could catch, here are some pointers to get you started.

A Beginner’s Guide to Deep Sea Fishing

What qualifies as deep sea fishing?

As its name suggests, deep sea fishing takes place in waters of great depths. Usually, “deep sea” is defined as being at least 100 feet deep. These waters are usually at least several miles from the shoreline.

What types of fish can I catch?

The type of fish you target will all depend on your fishing location. In the waters off Alaska’s shoreline, you could catch anything from salon to halibut, to red snapper, rock fish, and cod. There are dozens of saltwater species to be caught off the coast of Alaska, however, so you never know what you might catch.

What techniques are used?

Anglers use several techniques to catch fish in deep waters. One is trolling, which involves the use of downriggers or outriggers to drop lines to significant depths using weights and mechanical equipment, while the boat moves throughout the water. You can also use bottom fishing by dropping your lure or bait with a sinker when the boat is anchored. Some anglers also use deep dropping to sink their lines to at least 300 feet using electric reels.

What kind of fishing boat will you need?

To reach deep waters as safely as possible, you’ll need a reliable fishing boat. Your saltwater fishing boat can be as luxurious or as straightforward as you see fit. At the very least, it must be able to navigate six- to eight-foot waves. There are many factors to consider when searching for the perfect boat, from material to horsepower rating and craft design. Catamarans with twin hulls are especially popular in Alaska’s waters for providing a smooth, straight ride. A boat of 15 to 35 feet made from fiberglass or aluminum is a good starting point for deep sea fishing.
