How to Prepare a Boat for Spring Use 

1. Top Up the Engine Oil 

This oil lubricates metal parts to prevent corrosion and keep the engine running smoothly. However, to do its job effectively, it must be replaced at least once a year. Otherwise, sediments and acidity in the oil will compromise its function.

If you didn’t change your engine oil before winterizing your boat, now’s the time to do it. First, start the engine and warm the oil to stir the contaminants and ensure they don’t remain at the bottom of the pan. Then, drain it and refill the tank to the level recommended in the operating manual.

2. Test the Battery

The battery powers the engine and all electrical boat equipment. Cold temperatures can freeze the circuits and cause permanent damage. If the battery was left in the boat, start by checking the case. Make sure it’s not bulging or cracking, which might point to alternator issues. Next, check the terminals for corrosion, which could make charging dangerous. If you spot corrosion, clean it with a wire brush. 

If it’s a lead-acid battery with wet cells, check the fluid level and, if necessary, add distilled water. 

Lastly, check the voltage of the battery using an all-in-one meter. You’ll likely have to recharge it to get it functional again.

3. Inspect Fuel Lines & Cooling System Hoses 

Respectively, the fuel lines and cooling system ensure the engine has fuel and doesn’t overheat. Check the fuel lines and cooling hoses for cracks caused by freezing temperatures. If you drained these systems or used antifreeze, cracks should not occur. If necessary, replace these components to avoid leaks. 

Next, clean the fuel filter, which keeps contaminants out and prevents clogs that can keep fuel from reaching the engine. Once this is done, refill the cooling system with coolant and water, and add fresh fuel to the gas tank.
