When you’re first starting out in the welding industry, it’s not only important to know the proper techniques for completing the job, but also how to stay safe. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), welders are exposed to harmful fumes and gas byproducts that can cause respiratory problems. As such, you must wear a respirator. Two of the most common options are supplied air respirators (SARs) and powered air-purifying respirators (PAPRs). Below is an overview of how these work and why they’re beneficial.

A Welder’s Guide to Respiratory Protection

What Are SAR & PAPR Systems?

Selecting the right respiratory protection is crucial for ensuring you’re safe during the welding process. The one you choose will depend on your level of exposure to contaminants, which toxins are present, and what kind of work you’re doing.

weldingThe OSHA defines a SAR system as an atmosphere-supplying respirator in which the source of clean air is not meant to be carried by the user. It uses a compressor to pump oxygen into the headpiece.

By contrast, a PAPR system is an air-purifying respirator that uses a blower to force ambient air through purifying elements. It includes a battery-powered blower mounted on a belt you wear to push oxygen into the helmet.

What Benefits Do They Offer?

Recent advancements in technology have helped improve respirator airflow so welding operators can experience maximum cooling while working. This increases your comfort and productivity.

A SAR system provides an unlimited, regulated air supply and eliminates filter maintenance, while a PAPR system offers unrestricted mobility and can better accommodate facial hair. Neither option requires a fit test, saving you time and money. By improving air flow within the helmet, they also prevent visibility issues due to fogging.
