How to Weld in Cold Weather

1. Maintain Your Equipment

Routine maintenance is critical throughout the year. However, it's especially important when harsh weather reduces your equipment's efficiency. Change your oil at the beginning of the cold season. Since freezing temperatures thicken the oils, consider using a lightweight oil to ensure adequate flow and reduce engine wear. 

Check your antifreeze levels and change your fluids, if needed. Antifreeze is essential in the winter, as it prevents freezing and corrosion on metal components. Lubricate all moving parts to reduce friction and avoid rust formations caused by wet weather conditions.

2. Pre-heat Your Metal Workpiece

Freezing temperatures will cause your welds to cool quickly and crack. Cold weather also affects the temperature between your weld and your workpiece, resulting in warping. To resolve this, create a warm environment where you can pre-heat your workpiece to at least 50 to 60 degrees. Use hand clamps to hold your piece in place to prevent bending as it heats up and cools.

3. Protect Your Rods

In the winter, stick welding is a convenient alternative to traditional methods. This method makes it easier to weld dense materials in freezing conditions. While beneficial, electrode welding rods can be sensitive to moisture and cold.  

If the rods become wet from rain or snow, the external shielding can crack or fall off while in use. Water vapor created by moisture and the temperature of the equipment can damage the weld. To protect your welds, keep your rods warm and dry.
