Walking at night is not the same as taking a stroll during the daytime. Because of the lack of light, it’s easier for pedestrians to become involved in a truck, bike, or car accident while out walking. In order to reduce your risk of becoming injured while on foot after dark, follow the safety tips below.

How to Walk Safely at Night

1. Stay Alert

It’s important to be aware of your surroundings at all times when walking at night. Resist the temptation to text or listen to music with your earbuds, as they can distract you from seeing and hearing traffic or signs of trouble. Keep your phone in your pocket and ensure you have your eyes on the road when crossing or walking near a busy street.

2. Gear Up

To reduce your risk of getting into a pedestrian-related car accident at night, wear reflective gear so that you are more visible to vehicles. You should wear apparel featuring reflective strips, such as vests, jackets, pants, and sneakers. You can also buy headlamps, LED arm and ankle bands, flashlights, and reflective backpacks.

3. Follow Traffic Rules

Stay out of the street and use sidewalks, crosswalks, and paths whenever possible. Always walk facing traffic so that you can see the vehicles coming your way. You should be mindful when crossing the street, even if you’re using a designated crosswalk, as visibility can be poor in the dark.

4. Bring Buddies

Walking at night is much safer when you do it with other people. You’re less likely to be targeted when you’re part of a pair or a group and are more visible to cars and trucks. If you can’t find people to accompany you, having a dog by your side can also help. Just be sure your furry friend is outfitted with a reflective collar and other gear to make them as visible as you are.
