Summer is practically here, which means you're probably eager to get outside in the sun once again. While people in their 20s typically have a lower risk of developing skin cancer, extended sun exposure will increase that risk exponentially. That's why oncologists caution people to protect themselves against harmful UV rays, starting from early adulthood. Here are a few steps you can take.

How Young People Can Protect Themselves Against Skin Cancer

1. Always Wear Sunscreen

Sunscreen must be worn every time you plan on being outside in the sun. UV rays can harm your skin even when it's overcast, so sunscreen must be your constant companion. For daily wear, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen for protection against UVB and UVA rays and make sure it has an SPF of at least 15. If you're swimming or participating in a sports activity, use a water-resistant brand with an SPF of at least 30.

2. Stay Out of the Sun at Certain Times

When you are spending time outdoors, keep in mind that the sun is most intense between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. It's within this range when people are most likely to experience sun damage, so you should seek shade if you're outside during those hours.

If you're planning an outdoor activity or event, try to schedule it before or after the peak hours. This is especially important if babies or children are in attendance, as they're most vulnerable to sun damage.

3. Don't Use Tanning Beds

While you should avoid all types of tanning, tanning beds are particularly problematic, according to oncologists. In addition to potentially causing serious burns, a tanning bed exposes your body to an intense level of UV rays. Repeated exposure can increase a person's cancer risk exponentially, while also contributing to age spots, wrinkles, and other skin defects. Remember, tans are a form of skin damage, as your body is trying to ward off UV rays by distributing melanin closer to the skin.
