Prostate cancer is one the most common forms of cancer in men. As with many types, certain factors can increase a person’s risk for developing it. Fortunately, understanding these risks can also aid in catching it in its earliest stages, when it’s most likely to be treated successfully. In addition to going for routine screenings, here are the risk factors you should know to create a strong defense against prostate cancer.

What Are the Risk Factors for Prostate Cancer?

1. Family History

There appears to be an inherited or genetic factor with prostate cancer, as men with a father or brother who has it are more than twice as likely to be diagnosed. In particular, certain inherited genetic mutations, such as the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes linked to breast cancer, appear to increase risk.

Similarly, the inherited gene changes that come with hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer can also be risk factors. For men with a possible genetic link, doctors may make special screening recommendations, such as earlier testing.

2. Age

While the odds of being diagnosed before the age of 50 are fairly low, one in 11 men will be diagnosed after age 70. Nearly 60% of cases are diagnosed in men who are older than 65. The good news is that survival rates are high when it’s caught early, but this means screenings should be performed as recommended according to age.

3. Race

Experts aren’t sure why, but prostate cancer appears more often in Caribbean men of African ancestry and African American men. These populations also tend to develop cancer at a younger age, which could indicate a need for earlier screenings. Asian American and Hispanic/Latino men are less likely to develop the illness than non-Hispanic whites.

While knowing these risk factors is important, prostate cancer can still occur in men with no known risks. For this reason, it’s important that all men have regular conversations with their doctors about screenings.
