A Guide to American Cancer Society Donations
As any oncologist will attest, the American Cancer Society (ACS) is an invaluable resource for the prevention and treatment of cancer. It funds research grants and public health advertising campaigns, holds the annual Relay for Life, and undertakes other public health objectives. As a non-profit organization, it relies on public donations to achieve its goals. If you are unfamiliar with the group, below is an introduction to the organization and its mission.
What Is the American Cancer Society?
The ACS was founded in 1913 and currently operates throughout the United States. It boasts more than 3 million volunteers—both medical staff and laypeople—devoted to lessening the impact of cancer among Americans, as well as globally.
It invests hundreds of millions of dollars each year on oncologist research, treatments, and a search for a cure. It sponsors numerous annual events to raise awareness of cancer and encourage donors to contribute to the cause.
What Is the Relay for Life?
One example of these events is the Relay for Life. These are locally-based and organized multi-day, outdoor gatherings that take place on a walking track.
Guests often camp out within or near the track, and activities usually include a walking lap for volunteers, a survivor lap for those who have survived cancer, a dinner, and a candlelight vigil to commemorate lost loved ones. More than 5,000 such events take place each year, and, since 1995, they have become the Society's signature event.
How Can You Donate?
Donations to the ACS are tax-deductible. Its tax ID is 13-1788491. You can contribute in your own name or in memory of a loved one. You'll receive an acknowledgment by snail mail within 2 weeks or an email acknowledgment within 24 hours.
They accept one-time gifts of cash, charge, securities, and real property, or you can make convenient, automated, monthly donations. Simply use the donation form on the Society's website to choose the method you prefer.
